Just couldn’t leave well enough alone

Sometimes when you do things by eye they turn out great, other times not so much. From the beginning, the coaming just didn’t look like it should. As mentioned in a previous post I thought it was too wide in front, too narrow in the back and extended to far forward. Because it was somewhat over sized, that part of the boat seemed to flex a little more.

So it was back down to the workshop. I carefully measured current and projected widths and plugged in the Sawzall (the best tool I own; with the right blade you can cut through wood, steel, concrete, tile and yes even live electrical wiring all at the same time).

Before the carnage
Measure twice
Well three times
Cut once
Establishing a center line and perimeter

Once I removed coaming, I also needed to cut back some of the cedar strips to widen the cockpit near the back. You can see from the images that I clamped the strips to get a good line. I cut back some of the cedar but mostly I had to add more strips to balance the sides.

You can see the gap created by evening out the sides

I managed to keep most of the old forms from the project and found one that matched the arc. After hot gluing in place I started filling in the front of the cockpit.

So much for the feature.

This is where the old coaming sat
This is just about where the new coaming will sit
