String Theory as it Applies to Kayak Construction

Posted on January 15, 2018January 4, 2023 by David

Well not exactly String Theory but I am trying to figure out the reason there is string embeded in the kayak structure.

It loops from the cockpit up to within a foot or so of the bow across to the port side, then back to the rear of the cockpit. It was glued/nailed between the deck and gunwale and crossed back over via a small transom at the back of the cockpit coaming.

Was it an alignment aid? Did it keep the sides in tight while the deck was attached? Can’t I take a better picture?

Any other thoughts?
