The hull is complete…sort of

Posted on January 22, 2020January 4, 2023 by David

After gluing in the lattice, I was able to complete the planking of hull. From the pictures, you can see that some of the joints are not all that good. I had the wood curving back and forth and it’s not always easy to get a perfect fit.

Most of the planks had the bead and cove to help in joining. The whiskey pieces did not. You can buy the router bits to bead and cove the small pieces but I choose to do it this way.

Not to worry, I’ll use epoxy with some some wood flour mixed in to fill the joints. You can also see the shaving from the plane. I would end up planing a little more than first thought to get the high spots level but that would save sanding later.
Remember our old friends the magnets. Many of these final pieces wanted to fall out of place before the glue dried. Using magnets held the wood in place for the glue to dry.
The rough finished hull
The hull from the bow. It’s really difficult to see the contrast of the cedars in this picture. Stay tuned.
