The hull story continued

Posted on January 5, 2020January 4, 2023 by David

After planking the sides of the hull to a specific point, it was time to start the keel planking. This dark cedar stripping is intended to match the deck planking so I chose the darkest cedar.

It starts with the dark wood then transitions to lighter wood then to a design that includes walnut and ash. Usually there is not a lot of extra time spent on a fancy hull design of a kayak. For the most part the hull is hidden in the water. But I decided that it would be fun to try a few ideas. Plus it will look good going down the road sitting on top of the van.

You will see the inside of the hull through the cockpit so carrying the design to the deck will tie some of the design elements together.

You can see here that the red cedar has been ripped down the middle. This will help in bending the wood for the planned design
I had a lot going on here. I had to bevel the two ripped strips of cedar, glue some of it together, then separate them out for the curves.
If you look closely you can see where the cedar strips are splitting off
The design is taking shape
It’s hard to pick out but you can see where the red cedar splits to curve away then back towards the center. If you look at the middle center section you can see a strip of yellow cedar, a strip of walnut, another strip of red cedar, a strip of ash, then another strip of red cedar then yellow cedar.
