Epoxy, sand, rinse, repeat

Posted on April 22, 2020January 4, 2023 by David

Carefully doing the math, a coat of epoxy on the outside of the boat adds 12oz of weight. Knowing that I made sure that the two additional coats would be all I need for a smooth finish.

Each coat was rolled on with foam roller then any drips or runs were smoothed out with a foam brush. After each coat cured, I sanded the epoxy with 220 grit. Looking back I probably could have added another coat and not sanded quite as much but maybe on the next one I build.

Second coat. I’ll bet Toby Keith never envisioned this use of a red solo cup, a small boat builders most useful tool when finishing with epoxy and varnish.
Trying to level the coat. I didn’t have a lot of trouble with runs, my issues were mostly pin holes. I dusted with a tack cloth and wiped the boat down with mineral spirits but still got them. Almost too small to see but you can see the shiny reflection where the light refracted.
After sanding each coat, I moved the boat from the shop to next room where I had a tarp down to protect the carpet. That seemed to keep the dust on the epoxy down. Note the really cool basement with music posters and albums on the wall.
Ready for varnish!!!
