Hitting the deck

Posted on January 29, 2020January 4, 2023 by David

Once the hull was planked, I needed to flip the boat but still keep the hull on the frame. I made a couple of cradles to the curve of the hull. I simply used the plans and chose a couple of form outlines, laid them down on some plywood and used pushpins to mark the outline then cut the plywood. This really was not as complicated as I just described it.

With the forms built and boat flipped, I started the planks above the shear strip. The first small strip matched the ash accent strip.

Flipped and ready to go
Oh, look at the cute little clamps he has. Actually, while these clamps are very cheap (six for a dollar), they have a very good use. They don’t need a lot of clamping strength and weigh very little. When adding the ash accent strip, this kept the wood from bending or twisting from the weight.
Adding a few more planks. You can see the walnut shear then the ash then the red cedar.
A look from the bow
Starting the very ambitious design
The design look from the stern. This also demonstrates one of my woodworking axioms: You can never own too many clamps.
First look at my deck design. Spoiler alert: this “brilliant idea” will almost make me loose my religion. And thank goodness I don’t drink either. Stay tuned :).
